TOTAL ACIDITY TEST IN VINEGAR

TOTAL ACIDITY TEST IN VINEGAR

AIM:
To determine the percentage of acetic acid in vinegar.

APPARATUS:
Burette, conical flask, measuring cylinder, beaker.

REAGENT:
0.1M NaOH, phenolphthalein.

PRINCIPLE:
Acetic acid in vinegar is neutralized by NaOH. Phenolphthalein indicates the endpoint by turning pink.

PROCEDURE:

  • Pipette 10ml of vinegar into a conical flask.

  • Add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein.

  • Titrate with 0.1M NaOH until a faint pink color persists.

CALCULATION:
% Acetic Acid = Titre × 0.6 × 100%

4. CHLORIDE CONTENT TEST IN SALT (Mohr’s Method)

AIM:
To determine the amount of chloride in table salt.

APPARATUS:
Burette, conical flask, pipette.

REAGENT:
0.1M AgNO₃, potassium chromate indicator.

PRINCIPLE:
Chloride reacts with silver nitrate to form a white precipitate. The endpoint is a red-brown precipitate of silver chromate.

PROCEDURE:

  • Dissolve 1g of salt in 100ml distilled water.

  • Pipette 10ml of the solution into a conical flask.

  • Add a few drops of potassium chromate indicator.

  • Titrate with 0.1M AgNO₃ until a permanent reddish-brown color appears.

CALCULATION:
% Chloride = Titre × 0.585 × 100%
              Weight of salt
